Ointments

The Methods

There are two methods for making ointments:

 Method 1

Ointments are made by adding fat or wax to oils. The proportion of oil to fat will determine the consistency of the finished salve. A 20% mixture of wax to 80% oil is common practice. So for every pound of wax, or fat being used four pounds of medicinal oil is to be used.

Depending on what the ointment is to be used for will determine on the amount of what oils you use. Most ointments are produced by combining different medicinal oils. If you know what salve you are making from the start in most cases all the herbs required can be proportioned and added together while making the oil. This will save a huge amount of work and time if only one or two different salves are to be made.

The first step is to mix the required oils in a pot and heat to around 150 degrees F/ 65 degrees centigrade. In a separate pot melt your fat or wax. Besides the fact that many people don't like the idea of rubbing fat onto their bodies the ointment wont last long it is best to use bee's wax. The medicine in the ointments is coming from the herbal extracts in the oils not the fat or wax. The wax only helps keep the oils in contact with your body for a longer period of time to allow the medicinal herbs time to be absorbed through your skin. However, if you wish to make an ointment that is absorbed into the skin quickly or is to go on broken skin I would suggest that you make it completely from petroleum jelly (see method 2)

Next slowly poor the melted fat or wax into the simmering oil. Stir constantly as you are pouring. When all the components have properly mixed pour the solution into containers, and allow to cool. Another approach is to pour the salve into the jars place the lids on finger tight and place into a canner to remove unwanted air from the container.

Method 2

You can either use fresh or dried herbs rather than essential oils to the mix. For this method you use 50g/2oz of dried herbs to every 225g/8oz of melted petroleum jelly ie 1:4 part ratio where as with fresh flowers or leaves of the herb, the ratio is 1part herb to 3 parts oil. You add your herbs/flowers to the melted oil over a low heat, simmer for 10 – 20 minutes then strain and pour into sterile jars and seal.

With all ointments, do not use a metal sieve to strain the mixture with, as this will contaminate the end product. Either use a plastic sieve or gauze/muslin. This is especially important with magick mixes.

Salves have a shelf life of around three to five years so don't be making a life's time supply all at once. So the next time you go into a health store and are amazed at the cost of their products remember what is required in developing them.
