Use this oil to break hexes either adding it to amulets and poppets or for anointing the person who is hexed or the candle you wish to use for this purpose. It also has strong powers of protection. It can be seen from the above powers that you have a powerful oil that is a must in any practitioners cabinet. To preserve youthfulness, add to your bath. To enhance your visionary work, burn the oil and allow the scent to clear your mind and assist you in finding the answer to your questions. Add to purifying incense mixes as this oil emits powerful cleansing and purifying vibrations.

Health Uses: Rosemary is a valuable heart and liver tonic and also helps reduce high blood pressure although excessive use can increase blood pressure. Use as a steam inhalation to clear congestion of the head and respiratory system. It can be used to treat 'nerves', digestive disorders, gas, palsy, poor concentration and memory, dizziness and migraine. It stimulates hair growth and is useful in the treatment of dandruff. Rosemary is one of the best stimulants and is perfect for improving poor circulation and can help in lowering cholesterol. It is often used in penetrating liniments. Rosemary helps sluggish, under-active skin, and is used on dry, mature and couperose skin types and is a great anti-oxidant. It also helps in the treatment of cellulite and skin parasites. Use this oil to ease muscle and rheumatism pains for it has strong analgesic effects without the sedative effect of some other oils. It stimulates the nervous system, motor nerves, adrenals and a sluggish gallbladder. It is also a good insect repellent.

Excessive amounts of rosemary oil taken internally can cause fatal poisoning and even smaller doses may irritate the stomach, intestinal tract, and kidneys. Pregnant women should not drink rosemary tea. Should be avoided by epileptics as large doses can cause seizures.

Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia Myrtaceae)

Magickal Uses: None Known

Health Uses: Tea tree oil is amongst one the most popular oils used in aromatherapy and holistic health care. This Australasian oil was originally used by the aborigines for wound care. By the 1920’s it had been determined that Melaleuca oil was 12 times more potent than the accepted antiseptic at the time, carbolic acid and by the 2nd World War its antiseptic, antibiotic properties had secured it a place as a regular component in field dressing kits among the Australian troops. So, you can see that this oil with its clearing fragrance has a proven history in wound care.

This is one of the few alternative treatments that has been extensively researched for medical uses some of which is ongoing. It has a valid place in the treatment of cuts, burns, insect bites, infected splinters and all kinds of wounds, especially dirty or ones, which contain puss. Recent research at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia indicates that tea tree oil eliminates the onset of infections in first and second degree burns while rapidly healing skin tissue and preventing scarring. In contrast to iodine and hydrogen peroxide, two commonly accepted antiseptics, tea tree oil does not harm human tissue. It also kills germs upon application and prevents their growth for days afterward.  As an antiseptic it is valuable for general skin care, spots, acne and blackheads etc. As a general disinfectant it is especially useful for respiratory or genito-urinary tract infections i.e. bronchitis and sinusitis or cystitis.  Australian researchers compared a 5 percent tea tree oil solution to 5 percent benzoyl peroxide for the treatment of acne. The remedies' effectiveness rates were similar but the tea tree oil caused fewer side effects. It has also been found that this oil is effective against some of the hospital superbugs such as Staphylococcus aureus that are now resistant to antibiotics. As an alternative to traditional antibiotics, tea tree oil's complex chemical composition makes it extremely difficult for germs to develop resistance to it.  Tea Tree makes an excellent mouth and gum remedy - add 3 or 4 drops to a small cup of water and use as a mouthwash or gargle, or dab on neat to problem gums. This is a great way of maintaining oral hygiene as poor care in this area can lead to disease in other areas. Research into this area has shown that all pathogens found in the mouth were killed by a minimum of 0.5% tea tree oil and so has been proposed for this area. This low dose is important when considering the toxic effects that have been considered in some cases of absorption or ingestion, which will be discussed later.

It has been found to be an effective anti-fungal for the treatment of ringworm, athlete’s foot and thrush (candida). According to the cited research on www.bodyandfitness.com tea tee oil is lethal against many fungi including Candida, Malassezia furfur, dermatophyte species and all pathogenic species. Its role in treating toenail fungus has been proven (researchers determined that a cream containing 5 percent tea tree oil and 2 percent butenafine hydrochloride cured 80 percent of patients after 16 weeks, compared to none in the placebo group). A simple search on the internet will highlight that any nail fungus cream will contain tea tree oil where as the other ingredients often vary. You will often find suggestions for combining aloe vera or emu oil with tea tree for use on fungal infections especially of the nails where it is hard to penetrate. Also, this is useful when applying to sensitive areas.

It has also been found that tea tree is effective against several viruses and is an active anti-viral agent in general. It is useful for combating many common infectious diseases such as measles, chicken pox, flu, cold and shingles, as well as other viral complaints i.e. cold sores, verrucae and warts. It is suggested that this should be applied neat to the latter 3 though care should be taken to avoid healthy skin if using regularly as sensitivity reactions may occur. It is great as an inhalation for the treatment of sinusitis, catarrh, throat infections and coughs. By inhaling the tea tree steam, the active properties set about killing off the bacteria present and also reducing the inflammation present. It has also been used as a chest rub for bronchitis and catarrh. This is partly due to its camphorus properties, warming as well as actively being absorbed topically. From an eastern philosophy, you are applying heat to a damp condition so drying it up and removing it. It can be used for preventative therapy, helping the body fight off all kinds of infection which would be of use to most of us in this modern age of all work and no play which in many leads to burn out or disease, having lowered the body's natural resistance levels. It can be helpful to those who need to build up their strength before a surgical operation or for those suffering from chronic or long standing debilitating illness. Its possible application to AIDS is also currently being researched.

It can be used as an insecticide: comb neat Tea Tree oil through hair, or add to a shampoo or carrier oil, for a particularly effective treatment for head lice and nits, or to treat an itchy scalp or dandruff problem. Its mild analgesic effect will bring instant relief to a burn or scald, and the antiseptic properties will prevent infection. Tea tree oil is an excellent insect repellent and can be used to repel ticks and soothe sunburns by reducing inflammation; another area of research that has now been undertaken and shown effective and positive results as an anti-inflammatory. Sports medicine physicians, chiropractors and massage therapists can capitalize on the healing properties of this useful oil in the treatment of sports and work-related injuries as well as sore muscles. Applied to physical injuries, it sanitizes the area, reduces the level of swelling and acts as an anaesthetic. Its deep penetrating action soothes sore muscles and loosens them up, making this oil an essential tool in massage therapy.

Tea tree oil is employed in soaps, toothpastes, deodorants, disinfectants, gargles, germicides and increasingly in aftershaves and spicy cologne.

It has also been used to combat fungal diseases affecting animals, fish and plants. It is a suggested treatment for fleas and ticks.

Constituents

The active ingredients of Melaleuca alternifolia (or tea tree) oil are terpinen and cineole. Terpinen is the ingredient responsible for the healing properties. Cineole contributes the disinfectant properties. In large amounts, cineole is caustic to human tissue. In order to obtain the best results from using tea tree oil, the percentage of terpinen must be between 35 and 60 percent, and the percentage of cineole must be below ten percent to ensure skin safety during usage.

Principal constituents: Terpinene-4-01 (up to 30%), cineol, pinene, terpinenes, cymene, sesquiterpenes, sespuiterpene alcohols.

Cautions

Tea tree is less toxic than many essential oils. It should be emphasized, however, that essential oils are extremely concentrated substances and need to be used with caution. Essential oils are generally diluted before being applied to the skin, and are not taken orally. Tea tree oil may irritate the skin in some individuals; test with a tiny amount on a small patch of skin. Tea tree can safely be applied full-strength in drops to finger- or toenails (for treating fungal infections, for example). There have been cases reported of toxicity, certainly in veterinary cases where the oil has been applied topically. In most cases, the oil was used to treat dermatological conditions at inappropriate high doses. The typical signs observed were depression, weakness, incoordination and muscle tremors. This is because tea tree oil is highly lipophylic ie strong attraction for tissue fat. Toxicity in humans is generally due to oral consumption with symptoms of confusion and ataxia though there is the possibility that this is due to the alcoholic substances in the oil. However, toxicity similar to that of eucalyptus oil would be expected. Toxic does of eucalyptus oil range from 5-30 ml in humans, with symptoms including respiratory depression, coma and death (http://www.exoticbird.com/gillian/teatree.html). In children who have ingested less than 10ml of the oil, symptoms have occurred. Seek Medical advice immediately if you think ingestion has occurred. There are some recommendations that it should not be applied to broken skin or near the eyes where as others argue that it is perfectly safe to apply to wounds. I would recommend that if you are going to apply it to broken skin that you do it in a diluted form such as in Aloe Vera. There is a risk of possible sensitization in some individuals. The strength of Tea Tree oil should be respected and therefore large amounts should never be used neat on the body or in particularly sensitive areas. I found no mention of any problems associated with its use in pregnancy though I would suggest consulting an herbal practitioner before using this as a long-term remedy.

Thyme

Magickal Uses: Use as part of an incense mix or burn as an oil to attract good health. It can also be used for healing spells. As a purification herb, it can be burnt to cleanse your sacred space or an area. Anoint yourself to bring courage in a difficult situation. Another reason for burning this oil is to increase psychic powers during meditation and dream questing.

Health Uses: The essential oil Thyme reduces tiredness and neurasthenia and helps build up strength after long illnesses. Thyme oil strengthens the nerves, aids memory and concentration, can help with the feeling of exhaustion and combats depression. Thyme oil is beneficial to the immune system the oil is antibacterial; it acts on the bacteria's enzymes. Thyme destroys staphylococcus even after the oil has been diluted 1,000 times.  The essential oil is more effective as a disinfectant than many other chemical disinfecting lotions and it has antiviral properties.  It is used in the treatment of a wide range of conditions including warts, rheumatism, neuralgia, fatigue, and acne. Thyme oil can help in cases of poor circulation, as well as for arthritis, rheumatism, gout, muscular aches and pains, sprains and sport injuries. It is also helpful for cellulite, anorexia, obesity and oedema and could also be useful in cases of scanty periods, leucorrhoea, and to speed up birth and to expel afterbirth. In addition, thyme will discourage all manner of parasites and insects from invading your home. Use Thyme oil for sinusitis and asthma. It eliminates gas and reduces fever, mucus, and headaches plus it is good for chronic respiratory problems, colds, coughs, flu, bronchitis, whooping cough, and sore throat. Thyme oil lowers cholesterol levels. Use in vapour therapy for this or diluted as a mouthwash or as a gargle for gum infections and tonsillitis. As a massage oil Thyme oil can assist with: arthritis, bronchitis, colds, flu, coughs, gout, bruises, acne, dermatitis, abscesses, eczema, mucus congestion, muscular aches and pains, obesity and rheumatism, lice and insect bites. Cautions - Use sparingly. Do not make a habit of using thyme. Avoid therapeutic doses of thyme and thyme oil in any form during pregnancy because the herb is a uterine stimulant. Always dilute it well if used. Excessive internal use of thyme can lead to symptoms of poisoning and to over stimulation of the thyroid gland. Thyme essential oil can irritate the skin and mucus membranes as well as increase blood pressure, so use it in low doses.  Red thyme contains a high amount of toxic phenols (carvacrol and thymol), which can irritate mucus membranes, cause skin irritation as well as skin sensitisation. When using white thyme oil in massage therapy, it is imperative to do a skin patch test to determine if the person is sensitive to the oil.
